Chapter 5

The next morning, I showed up at the evidence section at six-thirty. I don’t usually get in before eight, but I wanted to get a head start on watching Burney’s interview. A counter separated the detective’s area from the row upon row of shelving that stretched floor to ceiling and ran the entire length of the west end of the police station. Each shelf held bags and boxes of evidence, all catalogued and placed in precise locations.

During the busiest time of the day, an evidence tech manned the counter, but the morning crew had just come on duty and I knew they were having their usual morning briefing. I popped the dinger on the silver call bell and waited.

I’ve always thought the evidence section was a great place to study unusual weaponry. Scattered in among the bags and boxes are various items that, for whatever reason, hadn’t been placed in sealed containers. From where I stood resting my forearms on the countertop, I could see several golf clubs tagged and laying on a bottom shelf. Pretty obvious how to use them.

Next to them stood a pressure washer and my mind took off with all the ways I could kill someone with it. I suppose spraying a person directly in the eye or ear could do it. Bashing someone with the wand would hurt, but I don’t think it could kill unless you got lucky with your placement.

On a shelf directly across the aisle from the clubs was a dented x-box 360, which I happened to know had been used by a young man to bash in his mother’s head after she’d pulled the plug on his game.

Above that sat a pair of dusty purple stiletto heels.

Speaking of stilettos, I heard the clip clop of high heels coming toward me and knew they could only belong to my friend, Marla Springer. No one got away with wearing six-inch heels in the police department except Marla, a beautiful oriental woman who wore her hair perfectly coiffed, her makeup expertly applied to the golden skin covering her heart-shaped face and manicured nails that could have been featured on the cover of Nails magazine.

Her face lit up when she saw me. “Alex. Andy said to expect you.” She pulled a manila envelope out from beneath the counter and tore off the evidence sheet stapled to the top. She briefly read the description of the contents. “I remember this case.” Her cheerful smile disappeared. “How anyone could do that to a baby.” She sadly shook her head and then set the paper on the countertop. She turned it towards me and handed me a pen. “Why on earth would you want to listen to this monster’s interview?”

“I don’t know, exactly. I’m just following up on a gut feeling.”

“Your little gnome jumping up and down again?”

Her smile had returned and I grinned back. My gnome had become famous among my friends and coworkers and they never missed a chance to tease me about it. “Yes, he is.
